Spirituality

Spirituality at South Petherton C of E Infants

At South Petherton C of E Infants, spirituality is woven through the life of our school. Rooted in our Christian vision, “Embracing the fullness of life” (John 10:10), we provide opportunities for every child to flourish spiritually, as well as academically, socially and emotionally.

We encourage children to notice the wonder of the world around them, reflect on their own thoughts, feelings and experiences, ask big questions and consider their relationship with themselves, others, the world and beyond. Through our Windows, Mirrors and Doors approach, children are given time and space to explore, reflect and respond, recognising that spirituality is personal and can be experienced and expressed in different ways.

Spirituality in Action

Our Partnership with Gai, Kenya

Our partnership with Gai Primary School in Mwingi North, Kenya, gives our children a powerful opportunity to look beyond their own experiences, encounter the lives of others and recognise that we are all part of one wider world.

As part of a learning exchange programme, Mrs Hudson travelled to Kenya with Dr Buckle and a small team, working alongside teachers and teaching and learning with the children. The photographs, experiences and stories brought back to South Petherton help make this relationship real for our children. Through our partnership, we celebrate not only the differences between our communities, but also everything we share: friendship, learning, play, hope and the desire for every child to flourish.

WINDOWS - Look Out

Encountering the lives and experiences of others

Our partnership with Gai opens a window onto another part of the world. Children see photographs, hear first-hand stories and learn about school and everyday life in Kenya. Gai is in a region where communities experience challenges including drought, long journeys to school and limited educational resources. Alongside these challenges, our children encounter the joy, determination, friendship and perseverance of the children and adults at Gai. We encourage our children to notice, wonder and ask questions, recognising both the similarities and differences between our lives.

“What can we learn from children whose school life is different from ours?”

MIRRORS - Look In

Reflecting on ourselves and what matters

Looking through this window also gives our children a mirror through which to consider their own lives. We create opportunities for children to reflect on things that can easily be taken for granted - water, resources for learning, our school environment and the opportunities available to us. Importantly, our partnership is not about feeling sorry for others. It encourages children to recognise that we can all learn from one another. The dedication of the teachers and children at Gai provides powerful examples of perseverance, hope and the value of education.

What are we thankful for?

What can we learn from the children at Gai?

What does compassion mean?

What does it mean to serve others?

DOORS - Act

Turning reflection into action

Spirituality can inspire us to respond to what we have encountered and reflected upon. Our children, families and wider school community have turned compassion into action through fundraising and giving. Previous fundraising enabled our school community to provide a water tank for Gai, giving the school access to something fundamental to everyday life.

Following conversations with the teachers at Gai about the resources that would be most useful to them, maths equipment was identified as an important priority. Thanks to the generosity of Lyreco, coordinated by Mrs Weston, a large donation of stationery and educational resources was collected. Mrs Hudson took the maths equipment and donated resources with her on her trip to Kenya and delivered them directly to the school, where they could immediately be used in the classrooms.

Our children and families continue to support Gai through fundraising, helping us to respond to the needs identified by the school itself. Seeing photographs and hearing first-hand about how these resources are being used helps our children understand the connection between compassion and action — and that even small acts of generosity can make a real difference.

“We can make a difference.”

Living Our Christian Values

Compassion • Service • Generosity • Perseverance • Hope • Friendship

Through our relationship with Gai, children encounter Christian values in a meaningful and authentic context. They see these values in the commitment of the teachers at Gai, in the lives of the children they learn about and in the response of our own school community. Our partnership reminds us that spirituality is not only about what we think and feel. It can shape how we choose to live and how we respond to others.
