Art and Design

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

– Pablo Picasso

At South Petherton Infants we are guided by the Access Art Curriculum. Our curriculum nurtures creative thinking skills and helps ensure your pupils learn through art, as well as about art.

National Curriculum

All pupils: • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences;

• become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques;

• evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design;

• know about great artists, craft-makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Intent

Our intent is to provide young learners with a rich and varied artistic experience that helps them explore, express, and communicate their ideas confidently. We want the children at South Petherton Infants to  foster positive attitudes toward creativity and resilience in their creative journey. We encourage them to articulate their artistic opinions, choices and ideas, and will enable this through hands-on experience with a range of materials and techniques. The children will develop a knowledge and appreciation of artists and for art as a form of personal expression.

Implementation

It’s important to us that ALL teachers feel able to use the activities and approach within our Art Curriculum. We have regular CPD to support using the Access Art pathways, helping to build teacher understanding and confidence. our curriculum will enthuse and empower teachers, and to make sure that teaching art is a pleasurable and rewarding experience.

We advocate gentle, ongoing assessment based upon lots of conversation, to discover intention and understanding, as well as reflecting on outcomes of the journey and end result. We have a Skills progression map showing the skills needed in each year group.

We study artists, designers and craftspeople not so we can make copies or pastiches of their style, but so we can learn from the way they see the world. The Access Art units follow tested pedagogical approaches and help build teacher understanding in addition to providing progressive projects.

The units cover the following aspects of Art:

Impact

Pupils will feel confident and positive about their creativity and art skills. Our process over product ethos will inspire and empower pupils to become confident creative and reflective decision makers.

Pupils will be knowledgeable of artists, designers and craftspeople and be inspired by the way they see the world, to create their own unique style.

Pupils will be able to 'join the conversation', having developed their oracy skills by discussing, 'what is the artist saying? How are they saying it?'

“Whether you succeed or not is irrelevant, there is no such thing. Making your unknown known is the important thing.”

– Georgia O’Keeffe
