Reading

At South Petherton Infants School we place the highest emphasis on teaching our children to read. To enable us to have a consistent approach to the learning of phonics and reading, we use a program called Read Write Inc. This is a proven phonics scheme and we are delighted with the results we are achieving. Each day Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children are grouped according to their ability in reading in class and are taught phonics, reading and spelling for 30 minutes. We regularly hold parent information meetings to explain how you can support your child at home.  If you have missed this please contact the school office who will be happy to make an appointment for you to find out more about the scheme and how we can provide support or visit:

Once children have progressed through the Read, Write, Inc. they are ready to read independently and develop higher order reading skills. When assessed, children move on to Read Write Comprehension lessons.  Reading sessions take place every day with all children who are ready and we use a mixture of home readers plus our library to support independent reading.
